Takedown Rifle Build Revisited
This video was first published on our Patreon channel, patreaon.com/therealgunsmith in 2020.
Our Patreon channel has a minimum of 48 exclusive videos, as well as photos and artography by Cathy, The Real Gunsmith’s wife, as well as items of interest.
From many requests, , Randy has decided to go over more of the specifics of the build of his custom takedown rifles. He highlights a recent build on a Mod 70 Win action, trued, .257 Wby and .300 Win. Mag two-barrel takedown.
But because there is a misconception about how and why different calibers may or may not be paired, Randy details the reasons. He highlights the precision needed to make these rifles extremely accurate.

Blow Ups!

In the first blow up story, that came within a hair’s breath of ending in death, is the video Randy discusses that was brought to our attention by a client produced by Kentucky Ballistics: ua-cam.com/video/1449kJKxlMQ/v-deo.html The blow up was from a 50 cal. Serbu and a very old round of ammo. After much thought, Randy feels that part of the problem was perhaps the old round had powder that ha...
Elk Hunt with Sons

Randy recalls the last elk hunt he and our two sons went on together on in 2006 [he was thinking at recording it was in 2005] in the backcountry of our beautiful North Fork of the Shoshone National Forest. He also recalls a solo scouting trip, with mule, horse and hound, with a funny twist. Photos included. Follow us on Rumble: rumble.com/v4nxh43-elk-hunt-with-sons.html Join us on Patreon for a...
Gas block barrel straightening
Переглядів 6 тис.2 місяці тому
First published on Patreon, we are now sharing here and on Rumble. Randy was sent 2 barrels out of around 20 that a client needs straightened. They are barrels that had glass blocks on them and though the barrels are in excellent condition, it appears that the barrels were slightly bent when the glass blocks were forced on them, when warm. These are two of the easiest he has ever straightened. ...
Many Action Options

We have many action options for custom rifle builds. Randy first discusses some of the newer actions to our line up, as well as the older actions, such as Mausers, Enfields, Winchester, Weatherby, Remington, etc. actions that will give you, with his expertise, just as good of a build as the newer actions. At one time Randy built some custom rifles on Terminus actions. They are well made, but th...
Ethics in the Field & Game Departments

I’m considering on getting a 7mm Weatherby magnum. What are your thoughts on this cartridge?
At that rate, with a 6.5-300 wby youd be 25% through the life of the barrel by the time its broken in 🤣
A true professional my hats off to you thank you
Great video thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m currently having a rifle build for a 8mm mouser. An old gunsmith is doing it and I’m helping with some of the work.Using the original action, 24” SS # 4 barrel in 30-06, Timney adjustable trigger with a muzzle brake .This is strictly a hunting rifle so it will out last me. My son will get it when I can’t hunt anymore. This is the first and probably last custom rifle I’ve ever owned.
7mm rem mag is a good cartridge, but theres irony in wanting an effective elk caliber, so you take a 338 win mag, probably the best elk cartridge there is, and neck it down significantly. 😂

A lotta years ago, I read about this measurement, but the recommendation was to measure the expansion of a new, factory load and try not to exceed that expansion. This doesn't help me much as I seldom fire factory ammo, sometimes because it is no longer produced. My actual question is whether the 0.0005" limit applies to each firing or first firings, only. Once a case has been fired three or four times, does a 0.0005" incremental head expansion mean the same thing as it would on first firing? Or, does arriving at 0.0005" growth from new indicate max pressure has finally been reached? I bought a blade mic for taking this measurement.
Great video! Thanks for the great content!
Randy I have a question. I am getting into reloading for myself. Have had others reload my ammo for me in past. Does this method need to be done on new brass, full length resized brass or will it also work on a fire formed piece of brass if I wish to just neck resize? I plan to do my loads from factory fired brass.
Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. “An accurate rifle is interesting” RS Indeed it is, we appreciate this 🙏🏽
hi Randy,you lathes name ?
hi Randy, whats barrel leveling bar you recommended for my,in lathe before chambering.
I don't. Watch my videos on chambering a barrel. Thanks for watching.
Very well presented video, very clear detailed explanations and I liked the ending suggesting folks may find other applications. Thanks!
I keep telling folks that STW & PRC don't actually beat the original Rem Mag. "You don't understand." But I do. Nice presentation
If you don't have small hands you can insert your ring finger in the micrometer. Really
This man is a national treasure
It's interesting to learn of he problem of depletion of wildlife by predation by wolves and grizzly bears by someone who has been involved with killing over 500 elk.
Just ONE pack of wolves can kill that many or more in ONE year. This has been over a lifetime of myself and with OTHERS on hunts. Get real!
A got a shirt to help support him while he was down . Glad to hear your info hope someone gets this info to scott
Can we get your thoughts on 30-06😊
A good cartridge within its range capabilities, with proper bullets for the job. See my video Loading 30-06 to Potential. Thanks for watching.
Any opinion on a 270wsm (Kimber) 10 inch twist using 160 gr as a hunting round?
A good load. Thanks for watching.
270-35 whelen should work and take care of most anything especially with 26 inch barrel.
So I absolutely like this design for replacement barrel setup. I would love this system in a two barrel at least. For me two possible smaller calibers would be either 25-06 Ackley improved or 280 Ackley improved. The second barrel for me would have to be 35 Whelen Ackley Improved. The biggest mistake I've ever made is selling my Whelen Ackley Improved. My issue is on my retirement budget would take me a year to year n a half to pay for one. That's knowing I don't need a fancy grade. Mountain man
Send us an email, we'd be glad to work up a quote for you, so you can plan ahead. Thanks for watching @StevenMMan.
Love your vdo
Great information about a take down rifle.
😊😊😊😊😊
do you do any of the wssm cases
No, as they have been, for all practical purposes, discontinued. Thanks for watching.
Nice, but I would personally just have two different rifles.
Outstanding work , sir
My question is: 243 winchester, Bergara B14 Load: 100gr / 6.5g or 105gr /6.8g I need a better understanding about that cartridge and 270 winchester aswell. People keep telling me don't get those calibers they aren't accurate and the barrells burn out way too quick. And I've been told by people who do a lot of sighting in for other people and generally are gun sellers. I'd maybe shoot the rifle 10-20x per year anyways.
Both are outstanding cartridges. There is a lot of BS out there by amateurs. Thanks for watching.
Outstanding caliber choices, on a beautiful rifle ! Nice work 👍
You really are the best gunsmith I have ever seen or known Mr Randy.
Good looking rifle
404 Jeffrey's
I'm really curious to see how you fasten the barrel to the forestock.
Randy never ceases to amaze me
Very nice rifle.
Gorgeous work and mechanical perfection I'm sure. Just an idea, maybe put a spare lock screw under the recoil pad so if you're really out in the middle of nowhere and lose it a phillips screwdriver could get you to the spare one. Thanks for another great video Randy.
Randy i just ran across your channel a few days ago love the no time for bull sh@#tt I have a custom 300wm that will shoot with the best of them my dad was a bench shooter he loved it over the years he befriend a gun making who built him at least 15 bench rifles our family friend has retired i was looking to get him to build me one more thinking maybe 300 weatherby maybe another 300wm i guess it does not matter as long as i get one more custom rifle
Very interesting talk my friend, have you ever heard of a Remington 700 in .308 with 5R rifling? I have one sir and it’s all 416 stainless steel with a jewel trigger and a EC tuned muzzle break, it shoots amazing even at 1000 yards Thank you for sharing all those beautiful rifles with us sir.
When you say speer 120 grain, are you referring to the 120 grain grand slam speer?
Speer BT 120 gr. GS is too, also. Thanks for watching.
I love your videos but this one is confusing. On one hand you’re saying they need to open up grizzly hunting. Then you talk about how the hunters aren’t ethical and can’t be trusted to ethically hunt?
Randy, my father in law purchased an old Spanish Mauser before he passed. It shots 2feet left and 2feet low . Thanks for showing this . Also I believe this is the reason for this rifle to be in such good condition. Nobody could hit anything with it so it didn't get used. I'm thrilled there is a way to fix it and I learned it from YOU! Thanks so much. It's chambered in -06. I put five rounds you could cover with a half dollar at a hundred yrds . Only problem is they are close to three feet from where I was aiming.lol
Thanks for the info Randy, as we all know large rifle primers are really difficult to find even now.
I'll soon be glass bedding a new stock for my old Ruger M77 (tang safety) chambered in .30-06. The original stock suffered cracks in several places. I appreciate this video for the insight.
2:18, that grouping is scary.
You are a gunsmith. The 7mm PRC prime selling factor is long range shooting. Hunting is a secondary use of this caliber. It was made specifically for high BC heavy for caliber bullets. By design the cartridge is even easier to load for. Thanks for shooting down bad writers that give misinformation there is plenty of that. Your opinion on the 7mm Remington Magnum is just that an opinion. It is a great cartridge no doubt but so is the 7mm PRC. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Isn’t a 7 mm x 300 a 7 mm Weatherby?
No. It is a .300 Wby necked to 7mm. Thanks for watching.
270-300 weatherby ?
Exactly what are you asking. Use a full sentence, please, so I know what information you want @702havingfun
Thank you for the video and sharing your stories! Remington 700 hasn't changed since its inception. When it's right, why change anything❤
great post
