Takedown Rifle Build Revisited
This video was first published on our Patreon channel, patreaon.com/therealgunsmith in 2020.
Our Patreon channel has a minimum of 48 exclusive videos, as well as photos and artography by Cathy, The Real Gunsmith’s wife, as well as items of interest.
From many requests, , Randy has decided to go over more of the specifics of the build of his custom takedown rifles. He highlights a recent build on a Mod 70 Win action, trued, .257 Wby and .300 Win. Mag two-barrel takedown.
But because there is a misconception about how and why different calibers may or may not be paired, Randy details the reasons. He highlights the precision needed to make these rifles extremely accurate.

    Second time watching this. There are no words to express how blessed we are to have you. The PRC world is wrecking our sport. Incredible. Hunting is going down the drain. I live in Idaho and our good tags are becoming “once in a lifetime” hunts. It’s easier to draw sheep the Owyhee’s than it is to draw the best mule buck tag. Thank you for being exceptional. I refuse to watch anyone else. They are all on the take from Hornady and the like. I would not even entertain the notion of purchasing a Hornady product. I have some old 140 BTSP in .277 that I wouldn’t part with. But the new stuff is a ruse. Please keep up the good work! Your fans have your back!

    Never heard anybody concerned with, or touting, BC when I grew up. I remember men in the family talking about various hunts, and rifles and calibers they used, physical and functional characteristics of those firearms, and the greatness of this or that factory load they swore by. But, never did anyone ever mention BC. They hunted in the woods, and rarely exceeded ranges of, maybe, 300-yards. In fact, in the fifties and sixties, not many had, or used, scopes. What they went on about, was the sized of the game (mostly deer)...and the rack it had. None of this is to say that improvements and useful equipment aren't welcomed; they are. But, for individuals that understand (and were taught) real hunting, and the difference between that and other sport shooting, BC means practically nothing. Just as bullet design varies with application, specifications on all components have to be evaluated by knowledgeable and experienced users. If you don't understand the effective and practical needs of your sport...you really can't well evaluate the manufacturer's pitch. That's where the money's made.

One being the 257 magnum the other a 338 - 378. I have a dilemma on putting a new Leopold scope of high cost with a dial on one of these arms. I have been very fortunate in my life to have lived in Alaska and known two of the best gun gurus in the state . Lee Penwell and my best friend James Cloyde Harris both now deceased. Our motto always was to never shoot an animal at a distance of more than 350 or 400 yds tops with a weapon capable of killing cleanly. If Hornday put as much effort into their designs as they did the marketing they'd be the American Lapua. But eh... why put in effort when you can pay writers to lie and get a lot of people to believe a lot of nonsense. You don't have to be the best, you just have to trick people into thinking you're the best. And I like some of their designs. PRC line are fine: like any cartridge if you mate it to a get barrel and work up a load it'll be fantastic. But they aren't the "magic bullet" all these paid writers and podcasts hosts would have you believe. Oh, and 100% on the ELD-X. Accubond LR or Berger's Hybrid Hunter are much better hunting bullets that have some slipperiness built-in. ELD-X seems to be a target bullet with some designs of a hunting bullet.

    It's just my opinion here, but I find that you don't necessarily need a rifle that shoots under 1 MOA for hunting. When I was younger I was under the impression that if you're going to shoot longer distances you have to start with a rifle that shoots at least under 1 MOA, which sure helps. I've built a few long range rigs with factory rifles and have shot them extensively at targets out to 800 yards. I used a model 70 coyote 25 wssm for a long range build, which is at best a 1.25 MOA rifle (3 shots at 100 yards). This rifle really impressed at longer distances and at 100 yards it wasn't impressive at all. I am able to shoot an 8 inch balloon just about every time out to 725 yards without missing. For me this went against all conventional wisdom. But I guess once the rifle is sighted in, shot to shot accuracy matters less than I previously thought. Rarely do you get second shot in a hunting situation. My furthest kill with that rifle is about 445 yards, and that elk left it's feet immediately.

    I'm a big fan of the trophy bonded bear claw bullets😊

  • @coreymerrill3257
    @coreymerrill3257 9 днів тому

    There is a good reason why a couple series of bullets have been around forever and will be around forever, despite maybe being expensive or less than popular. Swift A frame and scirocco II, nosler partitions, spear hot core and grand slam and their once trophybonded bear claws ,barnes triple shock . Sierra game kings . All require understanding of their design purpose ,but do what they do amazingly well for their intended purposes /ranges. Many of the soft tipped bullets have two niche situations in mind. Small cartridges with low velocity like 7.62x39,.300 blk, .338 spectre, 6.8 spc,6.5 Grendel, and other intermediate cartridges OR extreme long range hunting of 600 yards + . B.c. does take consideration for extended distances because a high b.c. bullet retains inertia better which translates to more energy on target. However if it's not balanced with high sectional density bullet weight and bullet construction for the job at hand , it's cruel to use for anything but paper Targets or plinking. As he says , it's a merchandising trick to rely on that one measurement alone. A 0.500 g1 b.c. is enough to reach 1000 yards. B.c. changes with velocity. Sectional density does not... mass/weight and construction doesn't either. So learn to identify your needs and let them be met by all considerations of the bullet.

    A lotta years ago, I read about this measurement, but the recommendation was to measure the expansion of a new, factory load and try not to exceed that expansion. This doesn't help me much as I seldom fire factory ammo, sometimes because it is no longer produced. My actual question is whether the 0.0005" limit applies to each firing or first firings, only. Once a case has been fired three or four times, does a 0.0005" incremental head expansion mean the same thing as it would on first firing? Or, does arriving at 0.0005" growth from new indicate max pressure has finally been reached? I bought a blade mic for taking this measurement.
